During ovulation, the ovary releases that one mature egg cell to the fallopian tube where it awaits that one sperm cell of the millions which can penetrate its lining of protective mucous. There is a direct relationship between ovulation and getting pregnant. Each month, each couple is given only one chance of conceiving, which is limited by ovulation, bringing it to a total of twelve per year.

This is probably the single most important thing to know when you are trying to get pregnant. To know when to have sex you need to know your ovulation cycle. Once you know your ovulation cycle you will know when you are ovulating and most fertile. And when you are fertile is when you should have sex.

Menopause can be defined as the cessation of menstrual periods for twelve consecutive months. However, it's entirely possible that menstrual periods appear to be stopping for several months, only to begin again. Ovulation and the ending of ovulation can actually take years to cease for twelve months in a row for some women.

Irregularities in ovulation are the main cause of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, whereby a number of cysts will develop at the same time on one or both of the ovaries. When ovulation is disrupted for any reason, a hormonal imbalance is created and this vastly increases the risk of cysts growing on the ovaries.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissues normally lining a woman's uterus grow or attach to organs located outside. During menstruation, the uterual lining is shed as per normal, but the portion growing outside the uterus remains. During ovulation and menstruation, the uterual tissue growing externally is aggravated continuously.

Conception and Ovulation are two sides of same coin and a crucial stage in the delicate balance of hormonal system, sperm production and pregnancy. A man produces sperm every day, while women ovulate only once during an ovulation cycle. In this short time period of 7 to 21 days, the egg is fertilized or destroyed, and conception takes place.

Perimenopause and pregnancy are an interesting pair. On the one hand, women have a decreased chance of becoming pregnant because their periods tend to be irregular (due to the hormonal imbalances), and on the other hand, they're at a higher risk for having an unexpected pregnancy because they don't know when their hormones will suddenly trigger the body to begin ovulating again.

Painful periods or what is known in medical terms as dysmenorrhea - A painful period in not a sure indication that a woman has endometriosis, although when the pain starts several days before the period begins and extends well past the period ends, that is an indication that a woman may suffer from endometriosis and pregnancy can therefore become more difficult.
